Water Softener Grain Sizing Calculator
How do I size a water softener for my home?
Multiply your household size by 80 gallons per person per day, then multiply by your water hardness in grains per gallon (GPG). Divide by 7 days to get weekly capacity. Choose a softener grain capacity that meets or exceeds your weekly demand. Under-sizing causes frequent regeneration; over-sizing wastes salt and water.
Grain Sizing Formula
The basic formula is:
Daily grains = People × 80 gallons/person × Hardness (GPG)
Weekly grains = Daily grains × 7
Example Calculation
- Household size: 4 people
- Daily water usage: 4 × 80 = 320 gallons
- Hardness: 15 GPG
- Daily grains: 320 × 15 = 4,800 grains
- Weekly grains: 4,800 × 7 = 33,600 grains
- Recommended softener: 32k-48k grain capacity

Efficiency Rating Matters
Not all softeners use their full grain capacity. Check the efficiency rating:
- High-efficiency: 4,000-5,000 grains per lb of salt (uses 80-90% of capacity)
- Standard efficiency: 2,500-3,500 grains per lb of salt (uses 60-70% of capacity)
A 32k grain softener at 75% efficiency delivers ~24,000 usable grains per regeneration. Factor this into your sizing.
Regeneration Frequency
Most softeners regenerate every 3-7 days. More frequent regeneration wastes salt and water. Less frequent regeneration risks running out of capacity during peak usage.
Too Small
- Regenerates every 1-2 days
- Wastes salt and water
- May run out of soft water during heavy usage
- Shortens resin lifespan due to excessive cycling
Too Large
- Regenerates every 10-14 days
- Higher upfront cost
- Resin sits idle, reducing efficiency
- Minimal downside unless severely oversized
Correctly Sized
- Regenerates every 5-7 days
- Optimal salt and water usage
- Handles peak demand without exhausting capacity
- Balanced upfront cost and operating cost
Peak Flow Rate (GPM)
Grain capacity is only half the equation. Your softener must also deliver enough flow for simultaneous water use.
Service Line Size and Flow
- 3/4" line: 8-12 GPM peak flow
- 1" line: 12-20 GPM peak flow
Peak Demand Calculation
Add up simultaneous usage:
- Shower: 2.5 GPM
- Washing machine: 3 GPM
- Dishwasher: 2 GPM
- Kitchen sink: 1.5 GPM
- Toilet flush: 3 GPM (brief spike)
Example: 2 showers + washing machine = 2.5 + 2.5 + 3 = 8 GPM peak demand. Choose a softener rated for at least 8 GPM service flow (not backwash flow).
Common Mistakes
- Using hardness in ppm instead of GPG (divide ppm by 17.1 to get GPG)
- Forgetting to account for efficiency rating
- Ignoring peak GPM requirements (causes pressure drop)
- Sizing for daily grains instead of weekly grains
- Over-sizing excessively (32k is enough for most 4-person households)
